What Is Family Conflict Counseling And How Can It Help?

The ultimate goal of family counseling is to bring the family unit back to a functional state. If the family has undergone some sort of obstacle like resentment, conflict between family members, a family member’s mental illness, difficulties between siblings, and/or issues with extended family members- family conflict counseling can be a great resource.

Having issues within family can take a toll on all areas of family members’ lives. It can start to cause problems in work, school, and everyday wellbeing. A family therapist can help a unit overcome these struggles, conflicts, and challenges when the family members feel that they have become overbearing or too much to handle.

The Process in a Family Therapy Session

At Highland Springs, each session and need is customized to each family unit to see the best outcomes. When a family visits one of our local facilities, or joins a therapist via Telehealth, they can expect their first visit to be as follows:

  1. The therapist will talk to everyone in the family that chooses to be involved to understand the situation that’s present. In this process, they may ask questions to get each person’s view on the matter, when it started to rise, and what the family has done thus far to handle it.
  2. Next, the therapist will put together a personalized treatment plan to handle the situation. They will work on goals to improve the family unit, not to target any individual(s) to blame the situation on.
  3. Lastly, the therapist will continually work with the family to help the unit establish better communication, solve problems independently, and teach/help discover new ways everyone can work with each other.

This process takes as long as it needs to. The average duration of family therapy usually takes about 12 sessions. Depending on how much the family progresses and meets with a therapist will depend greatly on the time it takes to restore family relationships and conflicts.
