Often times, marriage and couples counseling are used interchangeably. However, these terms do have distinguishing factors.
Couples counseling most often deals with unhealthy relationship patterns stem from historical habits that are causing issues in the present day. Typically, these unhealthy patterns are examined on a historical spectrum to help treat the issues at the root to help bring the relationship back on track for both individuals.
The therapist will focus on the emotional reasons that drive these patterns. Other factors may be talked about in these types of sessions including substance abuse, depression, anxiety, infidelity, and child-rearing conflicts.
Marriage Counseling also deals with present-day issues but puts more emphasis on the ‘now’. By focusing on the ‘now’, the session typically engages on the struggles of married life and putting the marriage back on track. The counselors provide advice about the relationship and/or help the individuals develop their own rational solutions.
Additionally, it is common for couples to get pre-marriage counseling before they get married. The purpose of pre-marriage counseling is to help individuals develop a strong and healthy foundation so when they start encountering struggles in the relationship, they have the tools to overcome the issues.
Whether you visit Highland Springs with the intent for one counseling over the other, the therapist will make sure this experience is individualized for your need. They can recommend which method may be more beneficial to the relationship, or perhaps recommend both.
