At Highland Springs Specialty Clinic, we use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocess (EMDR) Therapy therapy to help our clients overcome traumatic events, anxiety, and PTSD. With an EMDR therapy session, clients are able to heal from any symptoms and emotional distress they have experienced.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR Therapy) is an empirically proven psychotherapy that enables healing from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. EMDR therapy for anxiety, PTSD, and trauma can be useful in helping treat clients. EMDR therapy demonstrates that the mind can actively heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.

This type of therapy uses bilateral or auditory stimulation in a client’s visual field that then guides them through the intervention. By using a client’s own rapid, rhythmic eye movements, this dampens the power of the memories of past trauma. The lights provide a factor to focus on outside of the brain and help break the cycle of recurring traumatic memories. EMDR can help decrease symptoms and get a client their life back.

What to Expect after EMDR

One of the most common questions for clients is what can they expect following an EMDR therapy session? After an EMDR therapy session clients can expect:

  • Lower stress levels
  • Relief from traumatic events
  • Vivid dreams
  • New memories

EMDR trauma therapy has many benefits that can start to be seen after the first therapy session. Many people are worried about EMDR side effects and while they can occur, they are usually very manageable.
