It’s Your Journey, so You're in Control

One of the most empowering aspects of therapy is that you remain in the driver's seat. Your therapist isn't there to "fix" you or tell you what to do; they're your guide and collaborator. You set the pace, choose what to share, and work together to identify goals that matter to you.

One of our providers, Sharon Johnson (LCSW), put it perfectly: “Therapy empowers a client to make changes; and we’re just here kind of as a ladder. We give you information and you can use that ladder to climb up and forward. Sometimes you get stuck, or sometimes you fall back, but you still hang on to the ladder.”

Trust is built gradually, and the right therapist will respect your boundaries while creating a safe space for growth.

What Happens in Your First Therapy Session

Your initial sessions are about getting to know each other and establishing a foundation of trust. Don't worry about having everything figured out on day one! Your therapist will help you identify patterns, clarify your goals, and explore what brought you to this point.

Many people are surprised by how much relief comes simply from being heard and understood by someone trained to listen without judgment. This is the beginning of real change, and for many people that feeling of relief begins in their very first session.

Finding the Right Therapeutic Approach

Different approaches work for different people and situations. Some clients benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which focuses on changing thought patterns and behaviors. Others find healing through EMDR for trauma processing or discover new insights through art therapy.

For relationship concerns, couples therapy can transform communication patterns and rebuild connection. And if you're more comfortable starting from home, telehealth options make quality mental health care accessible from wherever you feel most at ease. Many of our therapists offer sessions both in-person and virtually to provide the flexibility you need.

Practical Steps to Get Started

Choose the right fit: Research therapists and mental health clinics in your area. Look for professionals who specialize in your specific concerns and whose approach feels right for you. Finding a therapist that “clicks” is essential to your journey.

Prepare for your first session: Write down what you'd like to work on, but don't feel pressured to share everything immediately. Come as you are and try to be open to learning and sharing what feels right.

Be patient with the process: Therapy isn't a quick fix—it's an investment in your long-term wellbeing. Some sessions will feel more productive than others, and that's completely normal. Each session is a step toward healing.
